Robert Sorby Spindle Gouges
The turning gouge is the single most important turning tool and is the tool that every amateur should start out with. For beginning turners we recommend the Robert Sorby fingernail profile gouges. These tools offer the most control and are the least likely to "catch" and tear up your work. The easiest solution of all is the Robert Sorby "Spindlemaster", which is a kind of hybrid gouge-scraper. This tool is the best solution for the casual amateur who does not wish to spend the time mastering the turning gouge and wants good results quickly.

The most frustrating thing that faces amateur turners is digs-ins, both with turning gouges and skew chisels. The Robert Sorby Spindlemaster does away with this problem. The Robert Sorby Spindlemaster is easy to use for even the least experienced turner. In addition to doing the regular planing job of the skew chisel, the Robert Sorby Spindlemaster will also cut both beads and coves. The Robert Sorby Spindlemaster will leave a smooth finish even when working on soft woods like pine which amateurs often have trouble with.
