Kremer Pigments Shellac Flakes
Nothing enhances the natural beauty of wood more than a traditional shellac finish. Whether you chose to do a high-gloss French polish finish or a plain shellac finish, a shellac finish will bring out the best in the wood. A shellac finish gives a piece a warmth and allure that warms the heart of a true wood lover. I don't know of any other finish that can do the same, and perhaps best of all, shellac flakes are non-toxic. For more information on finishing with shellac
Shellac is a resinous secretion of the lac insect. The raw lac is gathered from trees, primarily in India, but it is also produced in small quantities in Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand. The raw lack is then refined into various grades of shellac. The Kremer Pigments Shellac flakes that we sell are all refined in Germany, which is widely considered to be the source of the very finest shellac flakes.
Note: It is a commonly held misconception that de-waxed shellac is always better. It is easier to get a high polish finish with de-waxed shellac, but de-waxed shellac is far less flexible that waxed shellac and in some applications, with the normal seasonal movement of wood, it will become crazed over a period of time. It is often better to mix at least some shellac flakes with wax into your de-waxed shellac to make it less brittle.
