Lie-Nielsen Saws |
![]() Lie-Nielsen Saws Lie-Nielsen saws, like all of their tools, are made with uncompromising quality. Currently, Lie-Nielsen only offers the two models originally made by Pete Tarran. We consider both of these to be must own tools. A good dovetail saw is at the heart of any good shop and the Lie-Nielsen dovetail saw is as good as any ever made.
Lie-Nielsen Independence Back Saws These classic Back Saws are based on Sheffield made saws from the 19th Century. English and American saws of the 19th Century remain unsurpassed to this day. In fact, Disston saws became so reknown that even in Sheffield, it was a matter of great prestige to own a Disston. We have found more great Disston saws in Britain than we have over here where they were made. Lie-Nielsen saws have curly maple handles affixed with traditional brass split nuts. While we don't think the steel in these saws is as good as that found in quality pre-war saws, there is a big advantage to getting a saw that is clean, straight, and ready to use right out of the box. Well cared for old saws are very hard to find, as you can tell from looking at our vintage saw section.
Lie-Nielsen Carcass Saw The carcass saw is the workhorse of joinery, being used for all joints except dovetails, but sliding dovetails. Traditionally carcass saws were filed with a hybrid tooth pattern that was part cross-cut and part rip. This practice died out in the 20th Century, apparently as a result of initiatives by Disston. Today, rather than offer a traditional tooth pattern, Lie-Nielsen offers the alternative of buying the carcass saw with rip teeth. If you are buying only one carcass saw, we don't recommend the Lie-Nielsen rip cut saw. Our suggestion would be to buy a Lie-Nielsen cross-cut saw and each time you sharpen it file it a bit more like a rip tooth until you end up with the traditional hybrid tooth. You will know when you have it right just by using it. Both of these Lie-Nielsen saws are 14 tpi, offering a good balance between speed and smoothness of cut. Overall length, including handle, is 16", with an overall height of 4 7/8". Usable blade dimensions are 11" long by 2 1/4" deep.
