Lie-Nielsen Planes
The popularity of Lie-Nielsen planes has been consistently growing in recent years, in fact, beyond the factory's ability to keep up with demand. Lie-Nielsen planes are without a doubt the best quality mass-produced American made planes currently available. While not as aesthetically pleasing as the old Stanley planes, the Lie-Nielsen planes will perform as well as, and in some cases better than, the originals from which they are copied.
Note: None of the new plane makers, including Lie-Nielsen, grind the blades on their jack planes properly for use as traditional jack planes. A jack plane should have a pronounced radius on the blade, such that if you hold the blade vertically on a flat surface, there is a gap of at least a 1/16", and preferably closer to an 1/8", on each side. Unfortunately, when buying a new jack plane, the iron needs to be reground and sharpened before the plane will be ready for use. Traditionally, for planes and jointers would also have a radius to the blades, but this was a much smaller radius and is not as critical.

York Pitch Frog for #4 1/2, #5 1/2, #6, & #7 Lie-Nielsen Planes "Bailey" style metal bench planes, including those made by Lie-Nielsen, have their blades bedded at 45 degrees, a compromise between 40 degrees for softwoods and 50 degrees for hardwoods. This frog allows allows you to get the most of a "Bailey" style plane on difficult hard woods. We still prefer ECE planes or infill style plane for the most difficult woods, but this frog will certainly improve your performance. $74.95 |

Lie-Nielsen #40 1/2 Scrub Plane Fashioned after Stanley's 40 1/2, the larger of Stanley's two scrub planes, this tool is a must own for anyone that does not use a planer. Since we do all our work without the aid of power tools, the scrub plane is frequently reached for to quickly remove stock, or to begin surface preparation of raw lumber as it comes from the mill. Cast iron body with cherry tote and front knob. $154.95 |

Lie-Nielsen #66 Beading Tool This tool is a copy of Stanley's #66 beading tool, which in turn was a copy of a wooden scratch stock. The scratch stock was a tool used by every cabinet maker of old, and this modern equivalent is a tool that we strongly recommend. Besides the various beading and fluting blades that come with it, you can form your own blades to cut custom moldings on straight and curved edges. We use this type of tool at least once on most projects in our shop. $159.95 |

Blades for #66 Beading Tool Seven hardened spring steel double-ended blades (5/8" wide) will make 14 standard shapes and 1/8" and 1/4" router. We also include one blank that can be worked with files to make your own shapes. This makes quick work of reproducing small pieces of molding for repair or restoration. The blades will fit antique Stanleys as well, for those who have or acquire one without blades. $49.95 |

Lie-Nielsen #95 Edge Trimming Block Plane This plane is based on Stanley's #95 block plane, but unlike Stanley's version, is available in right or left hand versions. For some types of work, this is an extremely useful plane. It has a fixed fence that holds the iron at a 90 degree angle against the edge of a board. For boards up to about 3/4" wide, this tool is a very convenient way to get square edges. Precision machined from a manganese bronze casting.

Lie-Nielsen #97 Chisel Edge Plane Based on Stanley's #97 chisel edge plane, it measures 10" by 2 1/4". This is not a tool you will use very often, but for some things, they are quite handy. Precision machined from a manganese bronze casting with a cherry front knob.
| Lie-Nielsen #97 Chisel Edge Plane - Large | $184.95 |
Lie-Nielsen #140 Block Plane Unlike most of Lie-Nielsen's planes, this tool is quite different from the original Stanley plane upon which it is based. The basic plane is a skew-ironed block plane with a removeable side for rabbetting work. Lie-Nielsen has improved upon this design by adding an adjustable fence to allow the plane to be used as a fillester as well as a rabbet plane, and by lowering the blade angle to only 12 degrees. Precision machined from a manganese bronze casting with a cherry front knob. $199.95 |
