Thiers-Issard "Laguiole" Folding Pocket Knives

Thiers-Issard is one of the oldest surviving knife makers in France, having produced knives in Thiers, the ancient French center of knife making, for over 150 years. Thiers-Issard is best known in this country for its kitchen knives, sold under the Sabatier name with an elephant and 4 stars logo. These Thiers-Issard pocket knives are traditional French style pocket knives that have been produced in these patterns since the early 19th Century. The wine merchant's knife is an historic pattern that was once the standard pocket knife of the French wine merchant who would travel to the vinyards buying casks of wine. These knives have a hole in the bolster and can also be carried on a lanyard or belt hook. Today, this large, heavy-duty pocket knife appeals to a wide audience of peope who appreciate a good sturdy folding knife. Besides the heavy knife blade, the wine merchant's knife also has an awl at the other end which was used to pry out the bung on large wine casks. The smaller Laguiole pocket knife is what people think of as the classic French laguiole. This is a much lighter knife than the wine merchant's knife and is more practical to carry around in your pocket on a daily basis.

Note: All of these knives are very stiff to close. This is a safety feature so that they will not close by accident, but it necessitates that you use some care to close them.
