Grinling Gibbons and This remarkable study of English woodcarvers and woodcarving from the earliest times to the era of the Georgian furniture craftsmen is the result of twenty years' research by the well-known authority on the subject, Frederick Oughton. He pays special attention to the role of the carver in relation to the Crown over a period of several hundred years of royal patronage. At the center of the study stands Grinling Gibbons. The book also contains copious illustrated notes on the various ornamental carving styles and reproductions of unique contemporary documents. The whole work is enhanced by a large collection of fine photographs, many hitherto unpublished.
