These remarkable volumes are a testament to one man’s love of German Stoneware. Frank Thomas started collecting the 15th-18th century German ceramics after the First World War and by the late 1930s was an acknowledged expert on stoneware. Haunting shops and salerooms, he bought the best as it became available and by the 1960s he had an unrivalled private collection. Some of his finds are already in the British Museum and the rest will follow in due course. Volume 1 is a facsimile of the catalogue kept by Frank Thomas, with an introduction by his daughter Margaret. The text includes descriptions, prices paid and neat erasures for discarded pots ("Stoneware Thomas" was a firm believer in the "one in, two out" principle in producing a world-class collection). Volume 2 features almost 300 fascinating photographs, showcasing as many pieces as possible. Limited edition of only 500 copies.
