The Case for Francis Purdew by Don & Anne Wing
Previous authors had attributed the mark of Francis Purdew to Thomas Granford, using some highly implausible speculations to support the case. Don & Anne Wing did some solid scholarly research, and some inovative forensic work, and proved that this attribution was totally wrong. Reading the whole story while much of what is written about antique tools, and antiques in general, is speculative, the Wings prefer to substantiate with research, and not speculate. This book poignantly exposes the risks of speculation, by showing how very wrong the previous writings concerning the mark of Francis Purdew had been. Don & Anne come from a background in academia, and it shows in the rigorous adherance to substantiated fact in their writings.
